Re-See
VTRG has been part of an early experimental program for the HP Z Captis, a digital material capture system developed by HP and Adobe, since early 2024. Invited to showcase at the launch of this system at SIGGRAPH 2024, VTRG captured raw textile materials, including exquisite small handwoven fabric samples from South Asia and then transformed the digital version into striking physical woven form on a Jacquard loom. This work has pushed forward VTRG’s work in translating speculative concepts for sensory textiles into concrete form.

Sensory Silhouettes: Experiencing South Asian Garments
"Sensory Silhouettes" is an exhibition developed through a yearlong collaboration between VTRG and RISD Museum’s Costume and Textiles Department. This project explores the tactile essence of garments, focusing on how South Asian textiles can be experienced beyond visual observation, reconnecting visitors with the textures, colors, and cultural stories embedded in these historical pieces.
VTRG has crafted an immersive digital journey that brings the sensory silhouettes of these textiles to life. Using innovative digital material modeling and garment simulation, the textures of these historical garments are captured and simulated in a virtual environment. Additionally, two tactile works made in response to the museum textiles as well as a series of soundwalks featuring lyrical audio descriptions that evoke the sensory landscapes of the garments on display are included in the exhibition.
On view at the RISD Musuem, Aldrich Galleries, June 1 - December 8, 2024
